APD stands for Avalanche Photodiode. It is a type of photodiode that operates in the reverse bias mode, and is designed to detect low levels of light with high sensitivity. The APD is able to amplify the signal it receives by creating an internal avalanche effect, which generates multiple electron-hole pairs for each incoming photon, resulting in a higher electrical current. This makes APDs ideal for applications that require high sensitivity, such as optical communication systems, lidar, and medical imaging.
